There’s not much around, you think to yourself standing on the shores of Bothnian bay. True. No mountains or high rise buildings to stop your eye. Therein lies the magic: there’s no stopping you whether you want to run, go biking, paddling or walking into the horizon. For a higher viewpoint, climb a tree or take a zip line ride in one of the adventure parks along the coast.
Let nature find the best in you
Get outside and your heart will follow
In the flat landscape, you can choose to just chill or speed up, whatever makes you happy. In Nallikari, Oulu, a paved beach boulevard runs along the long sandy beach. Grab a pedal car or a bike and just roll around. For more speed, rent your water sports gear and head for the waves!
Spot the locals on their teambuilding day or at an an after work activity right behind the Oulu city theatre. Watch them engage in friendly competition – nothing like a wetsuit and a wake board to build team spirit! Grab your share of the fun once their time is up or book in advance to make sure.
In addition to the sea, the beautiful river Oulujoki delta invites you to spend some magical moments on a SUP board or in a kayak. You’ll soon forget you’re right in the middle of the biggest city in Northern Finland, as the river takes you forward.
Follow the birds
The Arctic Seaside gives you so many opportunities to go explore but at the same time, stop and wonder. Walk or run along nature paths in Vihiluoto, just south of Oulu, or 30 minutes further south in Liminka, to spot hundreds of birds gathering in what they think are the best wetlands in Europe. Can’t argue with that!
The locals are a little nuts over bikes – all kinds.
There isn’t a type of bike you can’t rent, from city bicycles to mountain bikes and fatbikes. Folks around here do their commute on one bike and enjoy their free time on another, all year round. So no shortage of well-kept routes in the woods, seashore or city.
Ride on sand dunes
A jog or bike ride with a view? In Kalajoki, wide duckboards along the beach take you through one of the best sceneries in the Arctic Seaside. Or, choose to feel the sand under your feet. Maybe take your spot on the dunes for a little yoga, facing the waves.
For a closer feel of the waves, take a sailing trip and visit the beautiful nearby archipelago. Or move in your own pace, paddling along the shallow shores or the Siiponjoki river in a canoe.
To really take your mind off everything else, visit the nearby adventure park for a chance to juggle your way forward, hanging from the tall pine trees. Don’t look down! And for a perfect view over the dunes, take the zip line ride from the tallest adventure tower in Europe, a whopping 32.5 metres above the ground. On your second ride, open your eyes to look at the amazing, blue, shimmering sea.
