The winter air gives you happy tears
Don’t curb your enthusiasm
Living along the Pohjola route, you learn to enjoy your favorite outdoor activity in any season. So you’re about to see kites flying high above the ice all along the seaside, as snowkiting enthusiasts ride the wind on the ice. Spot these extreme sport enthusiasts in Oulu, Raahe or Kalajoki. In Kalajoki, arctic paddling is also a thing: what does paddling amongst floating ice, and a chance to spot a seal sunbathing sound like?
The local kids can’t wait for the freezing temperatures that turn the nearby sea, lake, ditch or even hayfield into a skating rink or skiing route. There’s no lack of well-maintained routes in any of the Pohjola route destinations, either. So be a kid for a day – make the frozen sea your skating rink, get yourself rosy red cheeks on a snowshoe hike or skiing trip. Guided or on your own, you decide!
Fat tyres on flat surfaces
The seaside destinations on the Pohjola route, Oulu, Liminka and Kalajoki all offer you a chance to take different bike ride: flat, open landscapes as far as the eye can see. There are practically no hills to climb on the land side, either, but on the frozen sea, your route is as flat as it can be. Even for the locals, the vastness of it all takes the breath away. So grab a fat bike and make your day!
For a different kind of scenery, rent your bike, snowshoes or skis in Rokua Geopark or Syöte, and spend hours amidst snowy trees in a pristine, white landscape.
Sometimes, you hear the ice
sing under your tyres.
Hi-yo, Silver!
Leave it to our fellow northern species to give you a ride of your lifetime. Meet charming huskies and go for a spin in the magical wintry forest, over swamps and frozen lakes. Enjoy the sound of the sledge making its way through the snow and the sight of the dogs eagerly showing you what they were born to do. You might just get a wet kiss from the pack afterwards!
Sure, horse sledging is fun, but have you tried reindeer sledging? Reindeers used to be the mode of travel a few decades back in Pudasjärvi, close to Syöte. Now’s your chance to sit on a soft reindeer skin covering the sleigh and let these magical creatures pull you through a scenery of spruce trees covered in snow. Your heart soon finds the rhythm of the hooves tapping on snow.
