Things that make your heart beat faster
In the Oulu area, the locals ride their bikes all year round, and many own more than one to fully enjoy the magnificently kept routes both in the urban areas and nature destinations.
Besides biking, you can ride high on a wakeboard or go exploring the myriad of islands, rivers, seashores and lakes in a kayak, boat or on a SUP board.
For extra adrenaline, climb the treetops in an adventure park. To finish your day sweating it out, go swimming in the crystal clear northern waters – a memorable experience in its own right.
Water fun in the city
Start or finish your road trip with an adrenaline rush available right at the centre of Oulu. A short walk from the Market square with views over islands, bridges and fishing boats, there’s a waterpark that will lift you up on a wakeboard over jumps, obstacles and sliders.
For a little less speed, rent a kayak or SUP board and go on a guided trip or adventure on your own. The river delta is worth exploring for its lush, green trees, wild birds and amazing views of the city and sea.
Adventure away in the amazing arctic archipelago
Make your way south and make a pit stop in Raahe. In this little seaside town, you can access the arctic archipelago right from the town centre, on a kayak!
Or hop on a cruise boat at the museum pier. On the cruise, sunbathe on the sandy beaches of desert islands, spot sheep grazing away or sea eagles and grey seals minding their business on a northern summer day that never ends. Take a fishing trip to catch your own dinner, or fill your mouth with wild strawberries.
Ride on and above the sand dunes
To visit a famous and popular seaside destination, make your way further south to Kalajoki. Among the many wonders of this seaside resort are its nature trails that run along the river and pristine forests, as well as wide duckboards along the never-ending sandy beach. This place is magical – ask the Finns who keep coming back year after year.
So ride a bike to the sunset – or rather, into the midnight sunshine – or choose the water element. Rent your gear from the beach and go on a standup paddleboard fishing excursion or head out windsurfing. For those aiming higher, there’s an adventure park built in the treetops with a zip line slide over the sand dunes!
The Pohjola route makes your heart beat a little faster on land, sea or sky!
